Personalized conditioning and its impact on thermal comfort and energy performance - A review

چکیده
The building industry nowadays is facing two major challenges – the increased concern for energy reduction and the growing need for comfort improvements. These challenges have led many researchers to develop a personalized conditioning system. Personalized conditioning aims to create a microclimate zone around a single workplace. In this way the energy is deployed only where it is actually needed, and the individual needs for thermal comfort are fulfilled. In recent years personalized conditioning has received a lot of attention in research publications. This paper reviews the impact of different personalized conditioning systems on thermal comfort and building energy performance. In the reviewed publications, it was demonstrated that thermal comfort can be well maintained at ambient temperatures that are 4–5 K higher as well as lower than the temperatures recommended by current standards. Personalized conditioning also allows reduction in energy consumption due to an increased cooling setpoint, a decreased heating setpoint, or a decreased ventilation rate of the background system. Energy simulations show that reductions of up to 60% can be achieved. & 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effect of Velocity and Direction of Airflow on Thermal Comfort and Energy Consumption: Case of New Exclusive Cooling Systems
The application of personalized ventilation systems, particularly in the buildings, is one of the new topics that today presented to it, because of their proper performance in reducing energy consumption and creating better thermal comfort conditions. In the current study, the energy consumption of a personalized cooling system installed in a room, considering the constraint of thermal comfort,...
متن کاملMeasuring the Thermal Comfort Function in the Combination of Solar Windpipe and Wind Chimney (Case Study: Rasoulian House of Yazd).
Cooling is one of the most influential factors to provide thermal comfort. The inactive cooling systems for residential environments can help us consume non-renewable natural resources. The aim of this paper is to investigate the performance of solar windproof and chimney, saving in energy consumption, and reducing environmental problems. This research is implemented with a review of the Rasool...
متن کاملBuilding Design for Hot and Humid Climates – Implications on Thermal Comfort and Energy Efficiency
The paper discusses the concept of an adaptive thermal comfort design methodology and its impact on the selection, design and performance of climate control systems for large public spaces with transient occupancy in hot and humid climates. It outlines the design methodology which is based on providing localised comfort conditions to zones within a building based on its occupancy patterns, acti...
متن کاملDouble skin glass façade and its effect on saving energy
One of the most important methods of saving energy and providing indoor comfort conditions of buildings is the careful design of the façades. A “double skin glass façade” is optimally one of the best options that control the heat interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces. Two kinds of heating energy is usually transmitted through exterior envelope “conduction” and “radiation”. Double skin g...
متن کاملVentilated hollow core slab as a thermal mass strategy and its effect on thermal comfort; (case study: lotion college, England)
Thermal mass is the material's ability to store heat and release it after an amount of time and concrete is considered one of the best thermal mass material. Since concrete has been used widely in many building constructions, by considering the capability of concrete in terms of thermal mass, it is worthwhile to use this ability of concrete in order to build buildings more healthy and comfortab...
